During the last public meeting, Corner Brook city council approved a noise exemption for the annual Elmastukwek Mawio'mi next month. Deputy Mayor Pam Keeping explained why the city’s noise regulations need to be temporarily lifted. The Mawio’mi will feature drumming beginning as early as 5:00am on August 7, August 8, and August 9th. Current noise restrictions are in effect between 2200 and 0700.
Councillor Sherry Dean provided clarification that on August 7th, the events will take place indoors at Grenfell Campus.
Dean says the Sunrise ceremony usually lasts between 60-90 minutes between 6-8 a.m. Director of Protective Services Todd Flynn said he wasn’t aware of any complaints related to this activity.
