Lynn Howse is the Regional Outreach Officer with WRWM. She says the fire started and stayed far enough away.
UPDATE:
The fire at the Wild Cove Transfer Station remains contained. Crews continue to actively manage hot spots and prevent any spread.
To support ongoing efforts, Newfoundland Forestry will be deploying a water bomber in the area shortly. This is a precautionary measure to enhance current suppression activities and to soak the outer perimeter to help prevent any potential spread.
EARLIER STORY: An overnight fire at Wildcove was contained by about 8:30 this morning but crews continue to work on hot spots. The blaze broke out around 10:30 last night. Lynn Howse is the Regional Outreach Officer with WRWM. She says none of their buildings or equipment was affected, and the fire started and stayed far enough away.
Howse says curbside garbage collectors will be given access to Wildcove today but commercial or residential drop off is closed for today.
Meanwhile, Marine Contractors is on site with an excavator breaking apart burning piles so water can be applied directly to fire sources. Howse says staff are staying away so crews can work.
Today, the smoke is visible in the Bay of Islands and Corner Brook areas, prompting the city as well as Hughes Brook and Irishtown-Summerside to issue air quality advisories. People with respiratory issues, young children and seniors are being asked to limit outdoor activity, turn off ventilation systems, and keep windows and doors closed.
