There will be a special event at the Majestic Lawn in Corner Brook starting one o’clock this afternoon. Today is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S+). Qalipu First Nations Chief Jenny Brake says every year on this day they gather as a community to allow folks the opportunity for support and education. She says in order to end gender based violence and create safe spaces for future generations, we have to empower them with knowledge and make them feel valued, and if we don’t do that, we will never break that cycle.
Chief Brake says calls for action come from Truth and Reconciliation and the inquiries around missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. She says the statistics show that Indigenous women and girls, and two spirited people make up 16 percent of all homicides and 11 percent are still missing.
Chief Brake says intergenerational trauma among Indigenous communities makes people feel vulnerable and while there is a lot of work being done, there is still so much work that needs to be done.
