The city allowed a snowmobile group to have an event there during the winter which left the field in a bad state.
Members of the Men’s Softball league want a meeting with the Mayor of Corner Brook to talk about the state of the Fred Basha Softball pitch. Field. Vice President Greg Park says the city gave the go ahead for the Western Sno-Riders to have an event there during the winter. He says now they’re left with the damage and will be late starting their season. Meanwhile, the city did respond to our request for an interview with a comment. It reads, “The Mayor has asked staff to arrange a meeting to talk about any long term issues the Softball league would like to discuss, and that should happen soon. As for Basha Field, repairs are looking good and we expect to have a new net up mid-late next week. We see no reason why the Men’s league cannot start their season as soon as they’d like, and Recreation staff have offered options to make it work -- mostly out of an abundance of caution. In fact, the Women’s league began their season this week. Historically, things start in early June, so we don’t expect any significant delays. This will be our only comment on the matter.” Park says he keeps hearing the same thing and has been trying to get a meeting with council for over a month now. He says the Mayor gave the same comment to CBC when they did a story about a month ago.
