Parts of a grounded cargo ship in Cedar Cove are being hauled to a working pad on the beach to be trucked to Stephenville. Resolve Marine has been contracted to handle the MSC Baltic III wreck removal and they joined the Coast Guard for a media briefing on Friday. Mara Duvernois is the Project Manager and says the team has been working hard over the past couple of months, with a big focus on removing the remaining 63 containers onboard. Some were difficult and waterlogged, cargo hold water has been treated, and the accomodation block has been removed from the vessel's stern,
Duvernois says once parts of the vessel get onshore, the material will be broken down and shipped by truck to Newco Metal in Stephenville in the coming weeks. She says it will be speed and weight controlled with respect to the roads.
Duvernois says some material will also be shipped by barge to the Port of Stephenville and they're hoping to make the best of what’s left to the summer season to carry out work. She ssays the work will continue next year to continue the scrapping and restore the cove.
Resolve Marine has completed 43 salvage projects in 16 countries around the globe, some with similarities in Cedar Cove.
