Changes will ensure joint management of offshore wind resources, recognize exclusive jurisdiction of waters lying between the jaws of the land and certain coastal waters and modernize provisions relating to the offshore oil industry.
Government is moving forward with mirror legislation to the Government of Canada’s Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Atlantic Accord Implementation Act, or Bill C-49, in order to allow for future offshore wind development. Industry Minister Andrew Parsons says these amendments will ensure necessary measures are in place for renewable offshore energy opportunities. It will allow for a fiscal regime that provides the maximum economic returns. The offshore area for offshore renewable energy will be defined to exclude areas within provincial jurisdiction.
Parsons says changes will ensure joint management of offshore wind resources, recognize exclusive jurisdiction of waters lying between the jaws of the land and certain coastal waters and modernize provisions relating to the offshore oil industry. He says government is committed to supporting offshore renewable energy projects that contribute towards the goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
