Inflation is driving up the cost that employers have to pay for workers compensation

    Claims costs continue to rise, and have increased 22 percent from 2018-2022.

    The average assessment rate paid by employers to workers compensation  is going up by 4 cents next year. It’s going from $1.69 per 100 of accessible earnings to $1.74. Ann Martinis the CEO of WorkplaceNL. She says claims costs continue to rise, and have increased 22 percent from 2018-2022. Martin says this is due to inflation, benefit increases and longer claim durations. Martin says they are focusing on two key areas going forward. She says health and safe spaces prevent workplace injuries, and the inclusion of return and recovery at work programs. Martin says employers may qualify for a refund under the Prime program by completing safety training, as well as having Occupational Health and Safety, and return to work programs in place.
