MHA’s will vote on the agreement this Thursday.
Many points and questions were raised during the first day of debate on the MOU between Hydro Quebec. The agreement that was signed in December by Premiers Furey and Legault, was due to come in effect January 1st. This led to a call for an “extraordinary” debate. Government House Leader John Hogan says this deal is complex. The Opposition’s House Leader, Barry Petten, says it’s been surreal the past couple of weeks and the Upper Churchill is foremost on many peoples’ minds. He says as it is at this point, he can’t support the agreement without knowing all the details. Bay of Islands MHA Eddie Joyce says he remembers a $30 million dollar inquiry into the Muskrat Falls that should have taught us lessons. Any project over 4%0 million would be sent to an oversight committee, which has not been appointed in this case. NDP Leader Jim Dinn says there is much to understand about this agreement, however what is needed here is an Independent Review and taking politics out of the discussions. Dinn also says we don’t want a repeat of what happened with Muskrat Falls. MHA’s will vote on the agreement this Thursday.
