Government has announced the first Accessibility Plan for January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2026. Minister Responsible for the Status of Persons with Disabilities, Paul Pike, announced the Accessibility Act yesterday. This act requires all public entities, agencies, boards and commissions; provincial courts; public and private educational institutions; Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services; and municipalities, to prepare and make accessibility plans public by December 31, 2023. These accessibility plans are intended to deal with the prevention, identification and removal of barriers in policies, programs and practices of public entities for persons with disabilities. Minister Pike says government values the input of persons with disabilities, members of the Network of Disability Organizations, and others for helping to inform the development of the first accessibility plan.
