There is a major jump at the pumps today.

The Public Utilities Board (PUB) has implemented an extraordinary fuel price adjustment today after sharp increases in global commodity markets, raising the maximum price of several fuels across most of Newfoundland and Labrador.

All types of gasoline motor fuel are up by 12.4 cents per litre. Diesel will rise even more sharply, increasing by up to 26.7 cpl on the Island and 25.9 cpl in parts of Labrador.

Home heating fuels will also see significant increases. Furnace oil on the Island will climb by 23.2 cpl, while stove oil in Zones 13 and 13a in Labrador will increase by 22.46 cpl.

No extraordinary adjustments are being made to propane heating fuel at this time.

The PUB said the move comes after a rapid spike in commodity market prices that occurred after the board had already set its regularly scheduled fuel prices on March 6. Those prices were calculated using an average of market commodity prices from February 26 to March 4.

While the next regular fuel price adjustment is scheduled for Friday, March 13, the PUB said ongoing volatility in commodity markets means further extraordinary price changes remain possible in the coming days.
