A former Federal Minister and Member of Parliament, as well as provincial Minister and the MHA for this area has a solution to federal cuts for some local sports groups. Now retired after 35 years in politics, Gerry Byrne is concerned about this.
On Bayfm yesterday, Corner Brook Baseball Association President Jason Mosher says they’ve been getting these grants for many years and with the loss of the $35K, it means less coaches, canteen services and more on the backs of young people looking for a summer job.
Byrne says our young students need these jobs and the organizations need their talents. He says there are more students who need those jobs that come about through federal funding and organizations that can’t hire them without it. The provincial government boosted funding by $5k to the Corner Brook Baseball Association. Byrne says both the federal and provincial governments need to fix this and there is a solution with tens of millions available to fill gaps in funding needs that are identified after the funding rolls out.
