Councillor Paul Pike says many people have been reaching out to the recreation committee with support and donations for this long term goal, which could end up costing between $1.5 and $2M.
The Humber Arm South Recreation Committee wants to start with building a permanent ice rink and eventually, a fully functional outdoor sports complex. Councillor Paul Pike recently came on air at Bayfm to talk about the goal. He says it’s been a dream to have an outdoor rink in the town of about 1500 people and after seeing what the community of Meadows has, they started working on it.
Pike says Meadows recreation has a fully functioning party room, kitchen, washrooms, viewing room, mechanical maintenance area, two dressing rooms and a recent grant provided equipment like skates and helmets for kids to sign out at no cost. He says unlike Meadows who started from scratch, Humber Arm South already has a concrete foundation that is up to standard, washrooms and a chain link fence. The hope is to have the rink developed and in place for next winter but fundraising will be needed.
