Food insecurity is very high in Newfoundland and Labrador.  Paula Sheppard is with the Corner Brook Status of Women Council. She says this province has one of the highest rates of food insecurity in Canada. Sheppard says in 2022, food prices shot up 10.8 percent which is continuing. Joy Connors is with the Bay of Islands Ministerial Foodbank network. She says there are different levels of food insecurity from those who just worry about not having enough to those who make portion sizes smaller to skipping meals. Connors says people they see at the foodbank are there because they don’t make enough money. She says in January of this year, they helped 400 people with food assistance. Connors says now, they’re helping 181 families in this area and that number is rising. She says since the pandemic, there has been a 41 percent increase in the number of people who need food.
