Bill Best says it’s usually easy to make the catch but it took them all day just to catch 15 cod and the biggest one was only 4 lbs.

The NL recreational food fishery opened on July 23rd and will close next week on August 14th. Recreational fishers are limited to five groundfish per day (including cod). However, the maximum boat limit when three or more people are fishing is 15 groundfish. Bill Best of Cox’s Cove is home from Ontario to take part in the food fishery. Best says they headed out to traditional cod shoals on the south shore of the Bay of Islands on Monday and it was a struggle. He has spent 7 of his vacation days on the water and only managed to get a catch on Monday.
