Kristen Mercer says “they get a quality control email each day and they’re impressed with Corner Brook and they didn’t think we would get it this much this soon.”
Corner Brook’s new automated garbage collection and dual stream recycling program rolled out nearly two months ago, and according to the city’s Sustainable Development Coordinator, it’s been a success so far. Kristen Mercer joined Bayfm’s Lenny Benoit this morning. She says “they get a quality control email each day and they’re impressed with Corner Brook and they didn’t think we would get it this much this soon.”
Mercer says there are a few common questions about what is recyclable. Milk containers go with plastics and metals, Tim Horton’s cups are not recyclable, and shredded paper goes with other fiber for collection. Children's toys, laundry baskets and hangers all go in the garbage.
Mercer says recycling went to the Wildcove landfill site in the past but it is now being sorted by hand at Scotia Recycling, which is a big step in a sustainable direction. She says another benefit is streets are a lot cleaner now since garbage is stored in the blue bins, which cannot be torn open by birds or rodents.
