The MSC Baltic III lost power Saturday morning and ran aground in Cedar Cove.
A large container ship, the MSC Baltic III, has run aground off the coast of Newfoundland, just west of Lark Harbour in a location known as Cedar Cove.
The Canadian Coast Guard received a MAYDAY call Saturday morning 12 nautical miles outside the entrace to the Bay of Islands, indicating the ship had lost all power. Due to poor weather and sea conditions, the vessel was not able to secure an anchor and eventually ran around, prompting emergency response from various agencies, including the Coast Guard, Canadian Forces, Bay of Islands Search & Rescue, the local fire department, as well as Newfoundland & Labrador Health Services.
A cormorant helicopter from the 103 Search & Rescue Squadron in Gander successfully rescued all 20 crew members onboard the ship, though there as been no official word on any injuries.
According to the Canadian Coast Guard, the cause and extent of the incident are not yet known.
