The goal is to develop 5 new co-ops in the province during the next year.
A financial boost from ACOA will help the Newfoundland-Labrador Federation of Co-operatives launch an incubator pilot program. Slightly more than $140,000 was made available through the Rural Economic Growth program. Dave Walsh is the Managing Director of the Newfoundland Labrador Federation of Co-operatives. He says co-operatives are democratically run enterprises. Walsh says they intend to develop 5 new co-ops in the province during the next year. The co-operative incubator pilot program will support the growth and development of new, local co-operatives while providing clients with training, advice and mentorship. There are approximately 70 registered co-operatives in Newfoundland and Labrador.
