The CEO of the Alzheimer’s Society NL, Shirley Lucas, says there are over 25 different types of dementia.
Alzheimer's Disease is considered to be the most common form of dementia and this week on Bayfm’s the Plain Truth, the CEO of the Alzheimer’s Society NL spoke about the disease and the over 25 different types of dementia. Shirley Lucas says it could be frontal lobe, vascular, or even caused by mini strokes but Alzheimer’s accounts for 65 percent of the cases of dementia.
Lucas says over 771 thousand people living in Canada have been diagnosed with dementia and numbers are going up. She says it’s important to be able to recognize the signs early and get a diagnosis to be able to get the support needed. Lucas says 61.8 percent of those diagnosed are women and there is no single test. She says there are memory tests, MRI’s and CT scans, and those who show clinical signs of dementia are generally diagnosed by a family doctor. Currently, there is no treatment to stop the progression of the disease but some medications can help with symptoms.
