Without any prior notice, teams of four BOISAR members headed out into the woods by snowshoe.
Members of the Bay of Islands Volunteer Search and Rescue team recently took part in a training scenario that could happen to any of us. Imagine snowshoeing on the trails and tragedy strikes. Equipment on hand becomes vital as well as the skills to build a shelter and fire. Without any prior notice, teams of four BOISAR members headed out into the woods by snowshoe. Adam Gaudet is the Training Coordinator for the group. He told them to bring their SAR packs and provided more details when members showed up, giving them a scenario of finding a hypothermic patient and having to spend the night in the woods. Gaudet says it was also a great team building opportunity and for some it was their first time building a shelter and a fire while it’s snowing. Afterwards, members visited each other's shelters to discuss the pros and cons.
