It’s the first day for automated garbage collection in some areas of the city of Corner Brook. Residents need to keep about a metre clear around the bin to allow room for the arm of the truck to pick it up. Assistant Director of Engineering, Aaron O’Brien says it’s a new program and they will be "lenient" with people, and there are new drivers trained on the automated arms. He says they’ll be getting out of trucks to line up bins and the city recognizes this is new and will ensure people get help with collection.
The new dual stream recycling is in effect now as well and this week, collection will be for plastics and cans. Next week, they’ll collect paper, fibre and cardboard. O’Brien says education will be a big part of this and if anyone has garbage that is not picked up for some reason, call 637-1666, staff will explain why and the truck will be back to pick it up.
O’Brien says the new garbage schedule that is out in the mail answers a lot of questions people might have about the new program.
