A local doctor is excited to be part of the conversation that will make Corner Brook a Centre of Excellence in Aging. Dr. Amy Pieroway is a care of the elderly family physician and an associate clinical professor at Memorial University teaching in family medicine and geriatrics. She says this all started with the Health Accord and the idea is to improve access to quality healthcare for seniors. Dr. Pieroway says policies are very older adult friendly and the pathway needs to be treated differently. She says they’re training new doctors and nurses in geriatrics. Dr. Pieroway says the goal is high quality of life living independently as long as possible and this is called, aging in place. She says the Care of the Elderly Program has been expanded and two doctors from the Western Region will start the 6-month training in January.
