A Bell Island RCMP officer has been convicted on charges including careless use of a firearm and pointing a firearm at a person. A statement of judgment by Justice Sandra Chaytor says the complainant alleged the accused pulled his firearm, placed it against her head, and then stood and pointed it at her. Cst. Michael Wheeler was not on duty but was attending a social gathering and was drinking alcohol. The key issue was whether or not the offences actually happened. Witnesses included the accused, the complainant and a colleague of the accused. Both the accused and his colleague denied the events took place. The Court did not believe Wheeler or his colleague, nor did it find reasonable doubt, and believed the complainant. Wheeler was found guilty.
