Government is investing $20 million dollars to build 50 new provincially owned apartments in Corner Brook. It was Fred Hutton’s first announcement as Housing Minister. He says this will help increase access to stable, safe, and affordable housing for people in the western region and he’s met with a lot of people who need help. Immigration, Population growth and skills development Minister and Corner Brook MHA, Gerry Byrne says the project will include multi-unit buildings that feature a combination of one- and two-bedroom homes, the greatest area of need in the current social housing portfolio. The majority of these homes will be built in the Crestview Avenue area of Corner Brook which will also include the demolition of 32 existing long-term vacancies in the area, paving the way for new modern, accessible and energy efficient homes. A tender for the demolition stage of the project will be issued in the coming weeks and construction of all 50 homes is expected to be complete by 2026.
