Monday was the deadline to submit comments with the environment department on a renewable energy project at Corner Brook Pulp and Paper. Known as “Project Tuckamore,” it’s a more than $700M plan to retrofit the mill to decrease dependence on newsprint. It also includes the development of a wind farm with up to 22 wind turbines. At this week’s public meeting council approved comments outlined by staff and the Watershed committee. Councillor Donna Wheeler read the 6 comments from the city as well as some concerns. While no wind turbines are proposed within the municipal watershed, certain access road upgrades may occur within watershed boundaries. Any work undertaken within the watershed would require separate municipal approval and review by the Watershed Management Committee. Corner Brook Pulp & Paper has indicated that watershed protection will remain a priority throughout project planning and implementation.
Wheeler also highlighted the need to know more about how this will impact transportation and infrastructure. The City seeks a better understanding of how project-related construction and operational activities may affect municipal roads, transportation networks, and other infrastructure assets.
A decision on the environmental assessment of Project Tuckamore is expected October 16th
