Western Brook Pond takes on a whole other perspective when photographed from about 800 kms above the earth. Paul Laffin is an artist working with satellite imagery. He uses pictures of real places photographed from orbit. Laffin turns them into wall art with each piece labelled like a museum card with its coordinates and the date the image was captured.
Laffin and his wife did a road trip last year that included all of the Eastern Provinces and took a boat tour of Western Brook Pond in Gros Morne. He says it ended up being the highlights of their trip and finding it from space after standing there in person felt like completing a circle. Laffin says from directly overhead you can see the thing people describe but rarely get to look at whole: a fjord cut by ice, then stranded inland by the land rising after the glaciers left, still tracing its original winding shape through the Long Range tableland.Laffin also has a piece featuring Mistatsin Lake in Labrador, which is the result of a meteor impact crater.
