107 positions at Memorial University are being cut; a cost cutting measure of $12.7M a year. Jobs impacted include 19 redundant, 51 through retirement, and the elimination of 37 vacant positions across Management or professional, unionized staff and faculty. MUN President Janet Morrison says they “have a responsibility to ensure the university is financially sustainable and aligned with the students and communities.”
Also, academic units, and administrative and support will cut their budgets by four and six percent. No further cuts to the university-wide workforce reductions are planned for this year.
Meanwhile, although MUN expects an increase in new students this fall, total enrollment continues to decline. By 2030, enrolment could drop by another 12 percent.
