Corner Brook will see the first established centre of excellence in aging, which will lead to improved access to quality health care for seniors. Health Minister Tom Osborne says older adults visit emergency rooms more often and have higher amounts of medications. He says once renovated, the St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital for Acute Care of the Elderly Units (known as ACE Units), in St. John’s will also become a centre of excellence in aging.
This will mean seniors-friendly services, such as special attention to medication, special assistance from medical staff and mobility aids and Seniors-friendly emergency care at Western Memorial Regional Hospital. Dr. Susan Mercer is with Older Adult Care, NL Health Services. She says a new Geriatric Training Program at the Faculty of Medicine will allow the training to take place here.
Planning is continuing for a centre of excellence in Central Newfoundland and appropriate programming for Labrador.
