Abbott says there are 10, 000 kms of provincial highways but the south shore highway safety will be a priority.
Engineers will be assessing the south shore highway due to safety concerns. Transportation Minister John Abbott says he met with Bay of Islands MHA Eddie Joyce last week and saw pictures of the poor conditions. He says gabion baskets will be examined to see if they need to be extended or rebuilt. Abbott says regular maintenance is done to clear out debris from behind the walls but this is a safety issue now. Government recently announced 1.4 billion will be spent over the next 5 years on provincial roads. Abbott says there are 10, 000 kms of provincial highways but the south shore highway safety will be a priority. He says the challenge this time of year is getting enough asphalt and crew, but they are committed to getting the work done.
