The province’s Serious Incident Response Team, or SIRT NL, has cleared two Corner Brook RNC officers of any wrongdoing in the death of an inmate last Christmas Day. The 52 year old man died of internal bleeding due to a broken rib, and neither the officers, nor hospital staff were aware of that injury at the time. The cause of death was listed as blunt force injury to the right chest and the manner of death was listed as accidental. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner indicated the man’s intoxication from cocaine and alcohol may have masqueraded his medical symptoms. There was no physical altercation with police. SIRT NL Director Michael King says he has not “ formed reasonable grounds to believe either of the subject officers committed a criminal offence.”
