Premier Tony Wakeham shuffled his cabinet yesterday in light of a new Churchill River agreement, and he says this is to get ready for the next phase. This includes delivering major projects, unlocking opportunities in Labrador, improving services, reducing red tape and a more efficient government while still delivering on the core promises of better health care, lower taxes and safer communities.
Wakeham said they want to meet with stakeholders in Labrador and it’s important to start that immediately as they work towards definitive agreements. The new Health Minister is Joedy Wall and Wakeham spoke about Lela Evans transition from Health to Minister of Labrador Affairs.
Wakeham says discussions will continue with the Innu Nation. He says they are an integral part of this as well as with the federal government’s offer of an equity stake in the wind energy project.
Meanwhile, as part of the cabinet shuffle the MHA Humber-Gros Morne and former Government Services and Labour Minister has a new role. Mike Goosney is now the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Arts, as well as, Sport, Recreation and Parks. That position was previously held by Andrea Barbour and Wakeham has appointed her as Minister of Environment, Conservation and Climate Change.
The House of Assembly will open on September 14th so MHA’s can debate on the agreement between NL Hydro, Hydro Quebec and Churchill Falls Corporation Limited.
