RCMP NL issued a news release yesterday advising the public of a telephone scam involving a fundraising initiative of the RCMP for victims of sexual assault, namely sexually abused children. Police have since learned that a legitimate fundraiser is currently taking place involving the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Association (RNCA). Originally, RCMP received a report from an individual claiming they received a phone call from a local NL number. The scammer advised that they were a Constable with the RCMP, explained the fundraiser and provided options to donate through completing a pledge package that would be mailed out. The RCMP is not currently involved in any fundraising. The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Association is participating in its Annual Community Guide Telephone Appeal. Funds raised help publish their 35th Annual Crime Prevention Guide with this years’ focus on “Child Abuse Awareness.”
