Qalipu Chief Jenny Brake is raising concerns about the stranded cargo ship in Lark Harbour. The MSC Baltic III ran aground in Cedar Cove and has been stuck there since February 15th, with major structural damage done to the hull. The Coast Guard has a command post set up in the area and is keeping an eye out for pollution. This given the fact there are over 1.7 million litres of fuel onboard the vessel, which cannot be towed away. Chief Brake says it’s been well over two months now and members are frustrated with the lack of clean up action to date. She says it’s up to the owner to pay for the clean up and there’s a lot of people on site, but really no action.
Bay of Islands MHA Eddie Joyce told Bayfm news, there would be a meeting this week with the vessel’s owner and officials to work out a plan to construct a road. This after government sped up the approval for 4 kms of necessary land. Chief Brake says she hasn’t been invited to any meetings. Once again, she says that shows the lack of understanding with the provincial and federal governments and every province in Canada has the understanding that when something like this happens, a first point of contact is Indigenous communities. The Chief says they need to be a part of this process and they want to help with the clean up. She has heard from Mediterranean Shipping Company who wanted to set up a meeting but there’s been no time set yet.
