Premier issues statement on the passing of former Senator Ethel Cochrane, first woman appointed from NL

    Wakeham says, “Ethel Cochrane was a trailblazer for Newfoundland and Labrador, whose contributions helped shape our province and our country.”


    Premier Tony Wakeham has issued a statement on the passing of a  former Senator from the Bay St. George area.  Ethel Cochrane was the first woman appointed to represent Newfoundland and Labrador in the Senate of Canada in 1986 and she served for more than 25 years. A teacher by training, Cochrane worked as an educator in her native home of Port au Port East and ended her career as a school principal. Premier Wakeham says, “Ethel Cochrane was a trailblazer for Newfoundland and Labrador, whose contributions helped shape our province and our country.”
