The heads of NL Hydro and Hydro Quebec met in Churchill Falls yesterday to tour the area. In December, Premier Andrew Furey tore up the 1969 Upper Churchill Contract and signed a MOU with Quebec. Plans now are to develop Gull Island and expand capacity at the current plant. NL Hydro CEO Jennifer Williams says momentum is growing and there is a lot of work left to do.
Michael Sabia of Hydro Quebec says discussions surrounded next steps to reaching a definitive agreement by April, 2026. Sabia says now, given everything that’s happening globally, and the seriousness of U.S imposed tariffs, it’s creating a strengthened sense of urgency at Hydro Quebec to get this done soon.
Williams says resources will continue to be utilized and further developed, and it makes perfect sense to work with Quebec. The new power deal will result in more than $225 billion in total revenue for the NL treasury.
