Their Biodegradable Ester Pilot is getting slightly more than $101K from government’s Green Initiative Fund.

Newfoundland power is the first North American utility company to replace mineral oil in transformers with a synthetic biodegradable alternative. Their Biodegradable Ester Pilot is getting slightly more than $101K from government’s Green Initiative Fund. The project includes pole and pad mounted transformers and will run until 2025. These esters have higher flashpoints than mineral oil and are biodegradable. Once the pilot is complete, the company will assess the potential for future use. There is also a lower cost for replacement which could reduce costs to customers..
