Although a new Special Constable pilot initiative is being launched to support the RNC on the Northeast Avalon, it will eventually roll out to other jurisdictions, including Corner Brook. These constables will free up front line officers through low risk duties like supervising detained individuals, guarding crime scenes, traffic control, and assisting with administration. RNC Chief Patrick Roche says this will be an asset to the organization and policing within the province. He says police officers have been asking for help and special constables will eventually be working across the province. The RNC Special Constables will undergo a comprehensive 10-week training program, including six weeks of in-class training delivered by the Atlantic Police Academy, followed by four weeks of on-the-job training with the RNC. Recruitment will begin this fall with training to start in the winter of 2026.
