On average, 12 Canadians are diagnosed with MS every day and most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 49.
The annual MS Walk takes place this weekend, getting underway 1 p.m. Sunday at the Corner Brook branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. For three years now, a volunteer driven group of people have made this happen here. Melissa Brake is with the local chapter and is a MS Ambassador for Atlantic Canada, one of three in this province. She says they have set a goal in Corner Brook to raise $26K and so far $7K has been raised with more than 50 people signed up for the walk.
Brake says on average they see upwards of 170 people take part locally in the walk. On average, 12 Canadians are diagnosed with MS every day and Brake says numbers are growing. She says when she was diagnosed 14 years ago she didn’t know of anyone in the area with MS but now it seems like more and more people have it. MS is a neurological disease of the central nervous system and most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 49.
