Work is underway now to build an access road from the vessel to the beach, where tanks will be cleaned of fuel and large sections of the ship will be dismantled on a working pad.
The company hired to remove a grounded cargo ship from the Lark Harbour area has over 40 years experience, but they are faced with the challenge of marine weather and a short season before winter. Marine Resolve is the lead on the project that will get the MSC Baltic III out of Cedar Cove. During a technical briefing yesterday, Team Leader, Todd Schauer, spoke about some of the 43 salvage projects they’ve completed in 16 countries around the globe, some with similarities in Cedar Cove.
Marine Resolve has sub-contracted JCL Construction Ltd and Newco Metals. Work is underway now to build an access road from the vessel to the beach, where tanks will be cleaned of fuel and large sections of the ship will be dismantled on a working pad. Schauer says everything will be removed after the project is done. He says there will be a workforce of about 50 people who will be staying in Lark Harbour and says a marine-only removal would take numerous years because of a limited weather window.
The remaining 63 containers onboard the MSC Baltic II will be removed by crane and taken by barge to the Port of Stephenville.
