Byrne says across the province there were 110 applications received by developers that wanted to take part in this program and 900 apartments will be created.
Corner Brook MHA Gerry Byrne says he is looking to speak with local housing developers. On Bayfm news this week. Byrne highlighted the fact that only one developer recently applied through an $80 million dollar funding program to build 6 affordable apartments. He says Deer Lake and Stephenville had 4-5 developers apply and they are getting 20 units each. Byrne has spoken with developers from here who say the issue is getting timely permits and land zoning. Corner Brook Mayor Jim Parsons says it’s because private developers can get twice as much rent and the project is just not worth it. Byrne says the Mayor is not looking at the evidence. He says across the province there were 110 applications received by developers that wanted to take part in this program and 900 apartments will be created. Byrne still wonders why this hasn’t happened in Corner Brook and says there has to be a reason since the program is good and being accepted by developers. Byrne is asking developers to reach out to him to discuss any issues.
