Marine Atlantic has announced the name for its new vessel. Ala’suinu is a name that means “Traveller” in Mi’kmaq. Murray Hupman is the President and CEO of Marine Atlantic. He says Truth and Reconciliation is very important to Marine Atlantic and employees have overwhelmingly highlighted this as their top priority. Hupman says they consulted with Indigenous stakeholders regarding potential names that would recognize their culture and heritage in a respectful and meaningful manner. The new energy efficient vessel is expected to enter service in 2024 and will incorporate the latest accessibility standards, carry up to 1000 passengers, have 146 passenger cabins (including pet friendly cabins), 40 passenger pods, a variety of food service options, seating lounges, a children’s play area, and a kennel for pets.
