Quinn Jesso says Pride is so important because there are so many people who can’t be themselves and events during Pride month offer a safe space with support where people can be themselves.
June is Pride Month, an annual celebration of the many contributions made by the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community to history, society, and cultures around the world. It promotes equality, honours diversity and fosters self-identity over shame. Quinn Jesso is with the Corner Brook-Bay of Islands Pride Committee. She says Pride is so important because there are so many people who can’t be themselves and events during Pride month offer a safe space with support where people can be themselves. Jesso says there has been a curve the last few years but there is pressure now and people are scared to admit their feelings for the same sex, feel trapped in the wrong body, or don't identify as either sex. She says this adds a lot to some individuals who don’t even feel safe in their own communities; it’s saddening and disheartening but at the same time gives some people the fire they need to be who they are. Corner Brook events kick off today with a proclamation signing and flag raising at city hall. For more information check out the Corner Brook Bay of Islands Pride facebook page.
