It’s National Police Week and the theme is “Committed to Serve Together.” Yesterday, Justice and Public Safety Minister Helen Conway Ottenheimer highlighted recent budget investments and initiatives. Over the next two years, 21 RNC and 25 RCMP will be hired at a cost of $9 million a year. A Special Constable Pilot Program with the RNC will start soon doing things like supervising detained individuals, guarding crime scenes, traffic control, and helping with administrative duties. $500,000 has been announced to begin the project followed by $1.4 million annually. Special Constables will complete a 10-week training program, followed by four weeks of on-the-job training with the RNC. Recruitment will begin this winter with training to start next summer. As well, $50,000 has been budgeted for the RCMP Auxiliary Program that benefits education, crime prevention and public safety supporting up to 25 auxiliary volunteers.
