This is Municipal Awareness Week, a chance to celebrate civic engagement while recognizing the work of local governments. It all kicks off this evening with a mock public council meeting 6 p.m. at city hall. At last week’s public meeting, Councillor Donna Wheeler spoke about their “Mayor for the Day Essay Contest. All grade six students were invited to write an essay about what they would do if they were mayor. Congratulations to Joey Manning who won first place. He will receive a $100 visa card and is invited to City Hall to shadow the mayor and enjoy supper with senior staff, council members, and six additional contestants. They will all take part in tonight’s mock public council meeting.
Wheeler also spoke about events happening on Municipal Awareness Day, this Friday (May8th) at the Civic Centre Studio. Various departments will be onsite to showcase their roles and responsibilities. The event will include outdoor equipment displays, indoor information booths, a fun zone, BBQ and an opportunity to win a prize. This event is open to the general public from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
