Government is making it easier for people to get an education for an in-demand career. Under the Skills Development Program students can get money for tuition, books, cost of living support, child care and other education related costs, making these benefits amongst the most generous in Canada. Those who may be eligible include individuals receiving Employment Insurance. unemployed individuals without the necessary hours to receive Employment Insurance, but who have had a previous claim within the last five years, or paid Employment Insurance premiums in five of the last ten years. Approximately $140 million is available each year to train and upskill Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. Forecasts estimate that in the next ten years there will be 16,500 job openings in trades, transport and equipment operators and related occupations. Assessments can take between four to six weeks to complete, so those looking to begin a program of study in September are encouraged to get started as soon as possible.
