Coordinator Alison James says anyone can apply but the focus is outside of the metro area.
Food First NL is looking for retailers in rural areas to help improve access to food. It’s a big part of phase two of their Great Things in Store program. Coordinator Alison James says anyone can apply but the focus is outside of the metro area. Phase 1 involved a partnership with 6 retailers and included home delivery, online shopping, custom portion sizes, and reduced food waste. She says one success story was a business in Southern Harbour who had an interest in offering perfect portions and they provided a meat saw, vacuum sealer, and two fridge freezer combos. The owner bought bulk meat and provided portions for customers.
James says anyone who sells food, be it a convenience store, grocery store, or even from a mobile food truck can get involved. She says all they need to put into it is their time and commitment. Retailer applications close July 31st and more info can be found at foodfirstnl.ca
