Leif the Lucky says a pair of sisters, Paige and Abby Hickey living in Australia are also coming home for the Leifling Gala.
A big thing that happens at winter carnival in Corner Brook has always been about Leif the Lucky coming out of his hut during opening ceremonies. Tonight, the 53rd Corner Brook Winter carnival will open in the park with a ten day schedule of fun events and food. Carnival Chair Sandra Elms, joined Bayfm’s Lenny Benoit recently and says since they started with a prize chest in 2009, it’s more about what Leif brings with him from the hut. Prizes this year include Pokemon and Lego prizes. Leif the Lucky, a.k.a., Dave Elms, says entry forms will be available at Margaret Bowater Park but the winner up to the age of 18 has to be there when the draw takes place around 8 p.m.
Meanwhile, an event that started with carnival twenty years ago is coming up on Sunday with the Leifling Gala. Leif says it will take place where it all started at the high school cafeteria, which was then Herdman Collegiate. Leif says several of the former leiflings over the years are coming back for this one, including Aiden Mesher a 5-year-old Leifling in 2005, who will now be a judge. As well, Leif says a pair of sisters, Paige and Abby Hickey living in Australia are also coming home for the Leifling Gala. A leifling must be a student at an elementary school in Corner Brook, must make their own viking costume and must bring their carnival spirit.
