The Department of Forestry, Agriculture and Lands has issued a statement after a report of lynx sightings in Deer Lake on Wednesday. The department is monitoring the area and are asking people to not feed the animal or leave food out where any wild animals can access it. Pet owners should keep pets within fenced yards and dogs on a leash, or under close supervision while off-leash in public areas.
Lynx prefer forest habitat and typically avoid humans. Sightings of lynx near populated areas may be due to lynx foraging for snowshoe hare. While typically forest-dwelling, lynx will often seek prey along forest edges and occasionally travel in open areas near or within towns to reach other forested habitat.
Sightings of wildlife in and around populated areas should be reported to the nearest Forest Management District Office.
