Corner Brook Pulp and Paper is celebrating a 100th anniversary this year and Mayor Linda Chaisson says the mill is the centre of this city.
Officials with the city of Corner Brook and Kruger will meet Friday to talk about Corner Brook Pulp and Paper. The mill is currently shut down due to low water levels at the Grand Lake Reservoir as a result of a lack of rain. This is where Deer Lake Power creates electricity for newsprint production and excess power is also being sold off to NL Hydro as a means to keep the mill viable while new markets are identified. Mayor Linda Chaisson says this meeting is at Kruger’s request and she is anxious to meet with Mill Manager Darren Pelley. Corner Brook Pulp and Paper is celebrating a 100th anniversary this year and Chaisson says the mill is the centre of this city.
Kruger has also announced a $700 million plan to change to mill from solely producing newsprint and begin the manufacture of the other products. It also includes support for the sawmill industry and forestry sector, sustainability for mill employees, and construction of a wind farm to help with power production.
