BOISAR reminds everyone of the three T's of wilderness safety: Trip planning, Taking the essentials and Training.
The warmer weather and melting snow is a call for some to get outdoors and maybe even venture into the back country. However, the team at Bay of Islands Volunteer Search and Rescue is reminding operators that conditions are not the best this time of year. Member Stephen Decker says On Monday evening, 15 members responded to the call to help some people after they got stuck about 14kms in on Lady Slipper Road, just west of Corner Brook. Less than three hours later, members had equipment stored and ready for the next mission. Meanwhile, Decker says we are into a shoulder season where there’s not quite enough snow to use a snowmobile and too much mud in other areas to operate anything with wheels.
This is Emergency Preparedness Week and although BOISAR showed up with a 4 by 4, ARGO, they were able to get to the area without having to use it…..this time. BOISAR reminds everyone of the three T's of wilderness safety: Trip planning (let a trusted person know where you are going, what you're doing, and when you plan to return), Taking the essentials (including basic survival items and a reliable communication device), and Training (before embarking on backcountry adventures, be sure that your training and experience level will allow you to participate safely).
