Western Newfoundland is an avalanche region and snowmobilers need to be prepared if heading out to the backcountry. Stephen Decker has been with the Bay of Islands Volunteer Search and rescue group  for the past 14 years. He says snowmobilers should be ready for any scenario and stay in areas you are familiar with. Decker says when planning a trip, always bring along essentials like food, water, flashlight, matches, lighter, whistle, extra clothing, ice picks, and a first aid kit. Shawn Street has been with Bay of Islands Search and Rescue for nearly three decades now. He says always let someone know what your trip plan includes. There are 45 volunteer members with the Bay of Islands Search and Rescue team.
